Active Waiting – Prayer

Active Waiting – Prayer

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” (John 16:24)

Jim Maxim wrote, “Prayer is first and foremost our fellowship with God the Father; Jesus, His Son; and the Holy Spirit.” Before we ask for anything in prayer this month, let me encourage you to enjoy being in the presence of God. He has perfect fellowship within His three persons and it is amazing that He invites believers into that wonderful, loving union of Himself.

In the 10 days between the ascension and Pentecost, the disciples in a group of 120 believers were seen worshiping in the temple continually, “praising God” (Luke 24:53), and they were seen praying constantly in an upper room all in Jerusalem. (Acts 1:14) It is often assumed that they were praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit, but we find that this is not likely. The coming of the Holy Spirit did not depend on prayer but on the promise of Jesus. (John MacArthur) In Acts 1:4, they are instructed by Jesus to wait in Jerusalem and in verse 8, Jesus said, “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you….”

It appears that their waiting is not “doing nothing,” but active waiting which includes prayer, trust and obedience. It seems from the passages in Luke and in Acts that their prayers included worship. Jesus was no longer in their presence. The Holy Spirit had not yet been sent. They missed their beloved Savior and prayed to him personally in fellowship and worship. Jesus taught them the night before His death, in preparing them for grief, that they would be blessed by the complete Trinity (one God), and that they could ask anything in the name of Jesus as seen in John 16:24. It is perhaps here that the practice of praying in the name of Jesus confidently and in love and fellowship began, even as Jesus had prayed to His Father in Heaven.

Pray in love and in fellowship to our Wonderful Savior. Ask and receive in the Name of Jesus and  your joy will be complete!
