Son of David

Reading: 2 Samuel 7; Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:32-33

As I read through 2 Samuel 7, the word “forever” stands out to me. This is a strong word. This is a covenant relationship word.

One of the greatest steps of faith you and I take is to believe that the God of the Universe pursues a relationship with us. God’s Word affirms this pursuit. God makes “covenant” with representatives of the human race throughout history. The covenants that demonstrate His pursuit of humankind are the Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic. These covenants are founded on God’s promises to His people. God promises Adam that He will provide the Seed that will overcome Satan. God promises Noah that He will not destroy the earth again. What a joy to see a rainbow reminder. God promises Abraham descendants, land, leadership, and blessing through Abraham’s seed. God promises to reveal Himself through Moses’ followers in equipping them with the Law, the Tabernacle, the Priesthood, the Sacrificial System, the Land, and His deliverance. God promises a line through David that will FOREVER bless.

The Old Testament records how God’s pursuit of His children included the rejection of God by His covenant people. Humankind is oftentimes blind to the joy found in covenant with God. Humankind breaks covenant regularly.

God is not thwarted by humankind’s rebellion. God’s love is steadfast. He also established a New Covenant, not connected to any one representative man but to God’s own redemptive person. Through God, through His gift of Himself as Savior and as Spirit, humankind will discover FOREVER redemptive peace. Thank you, God for the Son of David that maintains covenant with you FOREVER. You are our living hope.

Seeing Advent as His child: The Son of David will wear a crown and reign eternally! Wait for it!
