Anticipating the King – December 14, 2019

Reading: Psalm 16; Daniel 12:2 (Best read out loud)

John 4:25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”

Some scholars say that the Old Testament does not teach resurrection, physical life after physical death. The Sadducees, a religious sect that formed during the intertestamental period, did not believe in the resurrection. Some scholars say it doesn’t really matter whether the resurrection is or is not. I strongly disagree. In the Old Testament God gives promises regarding His Anointed One that can only be fulfilled if there is life after death, hope in a victory over death. Resurrection is mandated by the promises. To not believe in the resurrection is to miss the essence of Messiah.

Followers of Jesus at the onset of the church age preached the good news including the resurrecting power of God. Just as we celebrate Christ coming as a baby, we anticipate Christ returning in His resurrected body to rule in the Kingdom and ultimately in the New Heaven and New Earth. These are simply the promises of God through the ages. Messiah lives eternally!

Acts 13:32-39  And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘You are My Son; today I have begotten You.’ As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David. Therefore, He also says in another Psalm, ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.’  For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay; but He whom God raised did not undergo decay. Therefore, let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.

Seeing Advent as His child: A spear would pierce Jesus’ side and confirm to the world that the Son of God had died.
