Anticipating the King – December 15, 2019

King of Kings

Reading: Psalm 72:9-10: Matthew 2:1-12

Deference is humble submission and respect. Kings, as great sacrificial leaders in the land, are worthy of deference. To bestow such honor on a little baby seems ludicrous unless the baby is born to rule. The Christmas story includes accounts of kings bringing gifts to Messiah. Their belief in the baby as a great king, King of the Jews, fulfills Old Testament prophecies. These magi from the east had a star to guide them, the heavenlies proclaiming His birth. Oddly, those that knew that a Ruler would be born in Bethlehem couldn’t seem to find their way.

Today, many see babies as a hindrance to their plans, a hardship to raise. So many babies do not experience birth. There are also those who want babies from their own wombs, but cannot. For many conceiving and carrying a baby is not as easy as it seems for others. The IVF industry is flourishing. Women everywhere are impacted by the death of babies. The magi of every age know babies are miracles worthy of our time and greatest gifts. Oh, the majesty and mystery of God in coming as a baby to save all humankind.
