Light of the World

Reading: Isaiah 42:1-7; John 8:12

I love seeing Christmas lights. I enjoy sharing the lights with loved ones and seeing what others have thought up to celebrate His birth. It is no wonder to me that Christ is called the Light of the World. Light is essential to living in truth, to physical and mental well-being, to finding our way.

In contrast to light, there is darkness:

Job 12:25 They grope in darkness with no light, and He makes them stagger like a drunken man.

Job 15:23 He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is at hand.

Job 17:12 They make night into day, saying, ‘The light is near,’ in the presence of darkness.

Psalm 82:5 They do not know nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

Proverbs 4:19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

John 3:19 This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

Seek the Light

Psalm 18:28 For You light my lamp; The Lord my God illumines my darkness.

Isaiah 9:2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.

John 12:46 I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light
