Celebrating The Everlasting King – Day 20

Lamb of God

John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

In Genesis, when Abraham takes Isaac to the mountain to sacrifice to the Lord, Isaac asks his father, “where is the lamb?” The Old Testament followers of God knew to anticipate a sacrifice, a lamb, that would die for their sin. When John the Baptist sees Jesus and announces that He is the Lamb of God, John is presenting Jesus as the substitute sacrifice for people’s sins. The scholar Tenney said “It [the title “Lamb”] combines in one descriptive term the concepts of innocence, voluntary sacrifice, substitutionary atonement, effective obedience, and redemptive power like that of the Passover lamb.”

Take a moment to consider these verses about the Lamb of God and to thank Him for His substitutionary gift of life:

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.

Genesis 22:8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

1 Peter 1:18-19  knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Revelation 5:11-12 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing.”

Worthy is the Lamb!
