Wonderful Counselor

Isaiah 9:6 For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

My husband and I once went to a pastor for marriage counsel. I was wanting a divorce. Weirdly, we were baffled by the pastor’s counsel and left thinking that we may have some insight into our marriage and more hope than we realized. We knew his counsel was not right and we partnered in wondering who could be trusted.

Two weeks later we learned that the pastor was stepping down from ministry. He said he was going on the mission field, but we learned that he was having an affair. We thanked God that we were not under that pastor’s counsel. We joined Bible Studies and worked on our marriage through the counsel of God’s Word. We fell in love with God and then with one another.

God is our Wonderful Counselor. A good pastoral counselor is one that knows God’s words well and submits to them. God knows us and speaks His truth in love. Through the ages, there has been no counsel as wonderful as the revelation of God.

The work of a counselor is to help the hurting discover their need, what is right and how to live in peace. The counselor’s work is often redemptive. God as our Wonderful Counselor is a ruler (the government will rest on His shoulders) whose wisdom transcends human reasoning. He does not need a counselor to reign. His counsel is right, His character is holy, and His desire is to bless. The baby in a manger is our Wonderful Counselor worthy of all praise. We should listen to Him.
