The Gospel of Jesus Christ

Author: Pastor Kelly Knouse

Read Acts 4:1-12

v.12 “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

In this passage, we find Peter and John detained by the “religious elite” for proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They previously performed a miracle and preached a couple of sermons that led to 5,000+ coming to faith in Christ. This display of God’s power left the world around them curiously perplexed. In verse 7, the religious leaders asked them the question, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”.

Think about the way this question was posed… “by what name?” When you reflect on the resumes of all the religious leaders, much of their accomplishments were the result of their own effort. They memorized countless scriptures. They worked tirelessly to keep the law. They even created additional laws to display their righteousness to God. In other words, their “name” was the source of their success. Sure, they acknowledged God, but the true source of their power came from their own effort. It was this reason they challenged the ministry of Peter and John.

Before we criticize these leaders too harshly, we can often find ourselves adopting their mentality. It’s all too easy to begin each day tapping into the power source of “self”. We can depend solely on our experience, education, training, or giftedness to make decisions, figure out problems, and even find fulfillment in life. The problem with relying solely on our “name”, our power is limited.

It’s here, in acts 4, that we are reminded of a Name that is above all other Names. And when we acknowledge and lean on His name, our world changes drastically. Here’s the challenge… call on His name today for all your needs and all your desires. His name is greater!
