Properties of Worship and Praise

AUTHOR: PASTOR RON UPTON

Read Psalm 96:9
Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness: tremble before him, all the earth. (HCSV)

There are several words translated “Worship” and “Praise” in the Old and New Testaments. Following are a few of the most common:

  1. Shachah is a Hebrew word for “Worship,” which means to bow down, fall flat and to humbly beseech.
  2. Proskuneo is a Greek word for “Worship,” and means to draw near with a kiss, almost like a dog would lick his master’s hand.
  3. Latreuo is a Greek word for “Praise” and means to minister or to serve.
  4. Halal is a Hebrew word for “Praise” and has the idea to make a show of, boast, be clamorously foolish.
  5. Tehillah is a Hebrew word for “Praise” describing a hymn.
  6. Yadah is a Hebrew word for “Praise” and means to thrust your hands in the air.

From these words, we can see that Praise and Worship is active, intentional, responsive and expressive. It is an expression of communion with God, based upon the character and works of God as He has revealed Himself.
