Loved to Love

Author: Pastor Brendon Schlappi

READ John 13:34
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” ESV

In this verse, Jesus gives us a pattern to follow. Love one another with the same humble, sacrificial love with which Jesus loves us. He also tells us where the power to love like this comes from. We first receive this love from Jesus, which frees us to express that same love to others. In short, we are to represent the love of Jesus to others by reflecting the love of Jesus toward us.

The world’s imitation of love is often characterized by reciprocity. But Christ’s love is a generous love that flows from abundance rather than lack. Jesus loves without measure because he exists in an eternal community of love; Father, Son and Spirit. In Christ, we are brought into this community of perfect love, enabling us to become conduits of God’s love towards one another.

And verse 35 gives us insight into the eternal impact of this command. Jesus says, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” In other words, there is something about the way we are to love one another that sets us apart from the world. Something that causes our neighbors to take notice, and see that our love transcends rational explanations. To see that we belong to Jesus, and that the true love they long for is found in Jesus.

Can the world see Jesus in the way you love others? Spend time this morning receiving the love that God has given you in Jesus. Reflect, in prayer, on the ways in which God has shown his love for you in the gospel. Allow that love to overflow into those around you today. Share it with one another.
