Live In Harmony With One Another

Brandon Arnold

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, inaccord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our LordJesus Christ.”– Romans 15:5-6

Do you ever struggle with getting annoyed at people? Find yourself angry, disconnected, or even distant from others? Maybe it’s a random stranger who cut you off in traffic, or a coworker who just keeps agitating you, or perhaps it’s your spouse after ANOTHER argument? It could be anyone… from a stranger you’ve never met, to the person you love the most. Face it, we all struggle to get along with others! Why do we do this? Because we are humans, and we have a selfish and sinful nature that lives inside of us that is constantly screaming “I’M the most important!”

In Romans chapters 14 and 15, Paul really focuses in on the concept of unity within the Body of
Christ. In todays verses we are challenged, and also given hope, by a simple truth: To live in harmony with one another, we cannot do it in our own strength, but must tap into and rely on GOD’S strength. Paul points out 3 things God imparts to the Christian in order for them to walk in harmony with each other.

  1. Encouragement – God encourages us with His Scriptures, and with His promises. We have
faithful testimony of God’s character to look back on, and a future hope of His promises to look
forward to. One of those promises is Heaven, where there will be no more tears, no more sorrow, no more suffering, and no more disunity.
  2. Endurance – God extends to us His gift of endurance, a long lasting patience that can weather
the toughest trials and challenges. An endurance that allows us to patiently wait for the fulfillment of His promises that we are looking forward to.
  3. Energy – God grants us the power we need to overcome our own selfishness. The power of
God, through the Holy Spirit , energizes the spiritual man within us in such a way that we can live in accord (or perfect harmony) with Christ Himself, and with our brothers and sisters of The Faith.

As we learn to live in harmony with one another through God’s empowerment and not our own
strength, we finally live out His ultimate plan… “that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”

God wants us to live in harmony with one another so that we will glorify Him as He deserves. This also becomes a tremendous evangelistic tool, as the world sees Christ is exalted through us, He draws men to Himself. (John 12:32)

Daily Living Application:

  1. Take a moment to think if there is anyone you are not living in harmony with, and then ask the Lord to help you find reconciliation with them.
  2. Are you spending time daily with God in His Word and through prayer? We can’t live in
harmony in our own strength, so make sure you are regularly tapping into the true power source, Jesus!
