Don’t Grumble With One Another

Reno Zunz

John 6:43(ESV) Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves…”

Let’s set the scene in the Gospel of John chapter 6. Jesus has a huge crowd following Him to see what amazing miracle He will do next. He proclaimed in verse 35 “I AM the bread of life”(that comes from Heaven). The Jews, who only saw Jesus as the son of Joseph and Mary, and the ultimate Entertainer, started grumbling to one another about Jesus. And if you read to the end of Chapter 6, most turned away from Him.

Though this situation is dealing with unbelievers, we undoubtedly can find application for all of us in the Family of Christ. The NT word for “grumble” is gogguzo which means to murmur or mutter under your breath. We complain. We express our dissatisfaction with a person or a situation. We grumble. None of these things promotes healthy spiritual unity.

Philippians 2:14 is a simple verse that nails me every time, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing…” Verses 15 and 16 explain the why for this direct command: We are Christians(children of God) in the midst of an unbelieving world. We are to be lights in the darkness. We are to hold forth the gospel in word and deed, so that the Spirit may draw those who hear and observe us unto a saving knowledge of Jesus. There’s no room for grumbling!

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world…”(Matthew 5:14). Here in Philippians 2:15 it states that “we are to shine like stars in the world…” Let’s look on the bright side! May others see Jesus shining through us in our attitude and our words as we Give Ourselves Daily to Help Each One Live in the Rescuing Power of the Gospel…
