Don’t Envy One Another

Author:Rob Taylor

The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes the importance of unity and love among Christians. In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he reminds us of the fact that our salvation is to completely transform the way in which we live and interact with others.

He says in Galatians 5:26 –
“Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one
another.”

Peter instructs Christians in the same way when he says in 1 Peter 2:1, “So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.”

Once we have experienced the life transforming power of the gospel, we are to begin putting away things that characterize our former life without Christ and begin to put on things that characterize our present life in Christ. Simply enough God desires to completely transform us, removing one sin and weakness at a time until ultimately He makes us like Himself.

Envy is the attitude that is angry and even hateful because someone else has something you don’t have or something that you want. Envy is often times willing to step on others to further advance itself, it is willing to ignore the bible and mission of the church to get what it wants. An envious person is only concerned about themselves and they are willing to tear down anyone who stands in the way of them getting what they want.

May we avoid the sin of envy and be useful church members that can work together in unity and harmony.
