Outdo One Another

Author: Pastor Steve Kirby

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” (Romans 12:10)

Have you ever heard the phrase “Quid Pro Quo?” It’s a Latin term that’s very popular in the U.S. England began using it in the early 1500’s and brought it to the U.S. during the founding of our nation. We hear “quid pro quo” used frequently in political and legal worlds, but it’s not limited to these professions. In layman’s terms, quid pro quo means “something for something”, or “a favor for a favor”, “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”, “one for one.”

That sounds like a good thing. But God has a better and more challenging plan for us. Romans 12:10 is God’s answer to those who want to do “just enough”: “Outdo one another showing honor.” He wants us to go beyond the “favor for a favor” and do it at higher level (quality, quantity) with greater consideration towards each other.

So, what’s the takeaway for the day?
• Outdo one another out of love, not obligation; love that is unforced and unrestrained.
• Outdo one another, even when things are not going well for you.
• Outdo one another, even when you don’t “feel” like it.
• Outdo one another by giving your best.

I say Quid pro… no! Let’s live out Romans 12:10, starting today!
