WHAT’S NEXT? The Great Commission

Author: Brendon Schlappi

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And
behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”

Do you ever wish you had the authority to do something that just don’t have the authority to do? Every
time a reckless driver flies by me on a double yellow line when I’m going the speed limit, I wish I had the
authority to pull them over an write them a ticket. (Don’t try this by the way, it’s called road rage). Or
when I want a chick-fil-a sandwich after church on Sunday, I wish I had the authority to open up the
restaurant, just to make one sandwich. And some waffle fries. And a frosted lemonade. And maybe bake
just one of those cookies. (Don’t try this either, it’s breaking and entering). When we want to do
something, but don’t have the authority to do it, we can be left feeling helpless and maybe even

But what happens when you have someone with you that does have the authority? Suddenly, doors
open and people pull over. What would it look like for us to remember this as we live out the Great
Commission? What might change if we stopped trying to make disciples in our own power and started
leaning on the authority of the One who promised to come with us?

Jesus didn’t leave us to carry out the work of spreading the gospel in our own power and with our own
resources. He promised that He would be with us always. God. With us. And He has ALL the authority we
need to make sure the work gets done. Yesterday, we celebrated Jesus coming out of that grave. Today,
let’s live like Jesus meant what He said when He told us He would be with us.
