WHAT’S NEXT? The Great Commission

Author: William and Cheryl Rameau

READ MATTHEW 28:19

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The first church members wanted to remember Jesus and what He had done for them. In order
to remember Jesus, the early church followed Jesus’ example by being baptized to remember
his death, burial and resurrection.

“It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was
baptized by John in the Jordan.” Mark 1:9

“So then, those who had received his word were baptized, and there, that day were
added about three thousand souls.” Acts 2:41

Baptism does not save us or forgive us of our sins. Accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of
your life comes first and then you follow through by being obedient to Jesus and getting
baptized. When you obey his command, you are showing your love for Jesus.

“If you love me keep my command.” John 14:15

At Idlewild, we believe in baptism by immersion under water. This is a picture of Jesus’ death,
burial and his resurrection.

“Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him
through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
Colossians 2:12

Baptism shows people you belong to Jesus. Baptism demonstrates our identification as children
of God. As it relates to us here at Idlewild, the local church, we are a body of baptized believers
with Jesus Christ as the head.

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ like a
garment.” Galatians 3:27

If you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior and have never been baptized, we
encourage you to take the next step and schedule your baptism. We need to obey his
command.
