WHAT’S NEXT? The Great Commission

Author: Steve Ernst

READ MATTHEW 28:19-20
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

We have just celebrated the greatest event that ever was, that ever is and that ever will be…the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. By blowing out that huge rock and walking out of that tomb, our Savior defeated sin and death, forever. Today I want to both encourage and challenge you on the
topic… “What’s Next?”.

So, Christ walks out of the tomb (as he predicted multiple times to the Apostles…how in the world did they lose sight of that after it happened?), so what’s really next? Let’s go to the Scriptures and find out what the Lord says. Let’s go to arguably (or inarguably) the most pronounced Post-Resurrection statement made by Christ, the 19th and 20th of Matthew 28…The Great Commission:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you. And, lo, I am
with you always even to the end of the age.

Wow…look at all those verbs. These verbs are imperatives (not indicatives), meaning they are not optional. They are commanded of us by Christ. To do what? Tell people what happened! Give responses and explanations to: Why did Christ come? Why did He have to die? Why did He have to die
such a horrible death? How He came alive after death. How He lives.

We are to Teach.

Our audience is everywhere. Biblical ignorance in our country has risen to alarming levels. Ligoniers Ministries just released a survey on the “State of Theology 2020”. The results are troubling (some examples):

  • 65% of Americans believe that “God accepts the worship of all religions…”
  • 48% of Americans believe that “the Bible is 100% accurate in all that it teaches” (wait, only 48%!?!?)
  • 65% of Americans believe that “God is a perfect being and cannot make a mistake” (what? Only 65%? Why is this [are these] not 100%!?!?)

If you were to ask any one randomly, even within the Church, to explain exactly how and why “…we have redemption through His Blood…[Colossians 1:13]…”, how many can go right to Hebrew 9:22 or Leviticus 5 or 17? Not many…very likely.

Why is this so? Easy answer…we are in a battle.

Ephesians 6:10-13, 16…10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground… 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

As we all look to hide God’s Word in our heart (Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.), the enemy looks to hide God’s Word (2 Corinthians 4:3-4 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 1 Peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.)

We are to join the battle. Be a part of it. A terrific and commanded way to “give ourselves daily to help each one live in the rescuing power of the gospel of Jesus Christ”…TEACH!

It will bring praises to the Lord.

It will align with advancing God’s Kingdom on earth.

And it will give Him the Glory!
