Carrying the Name of Jesus

Author: Greg Murphy

Read: Acts 9:15
“But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.’”

It was God’s idea for Paul to carry the Name of Jesus to Israel and especially to the Gentiles. While Paul worked to destroy the name of Jesus and to murder those who believed in His Name, Jesus spoke to him, and His voice was accompanied by a “light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions.” (26:13b)

In Acts 9, Jesus introduced Himself and called Paul to salvation and His Gospel ministry. When he went to Ananias, his blindness was healed and he was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Paul revealed more as he gave a defense before Festus and King Agrippa II in Acts 26. Jesus appointed Paul as “a servant and as a witness.” (16b) Paul’s purpose to carry the Name of Jesus in verse 18 is also ours, and should begin with prayer.

You are invited to pray each point of this verse, as you carry the Name of Jesus, for those you know who are lost, hurting or have fallen away from God.

“Holy Spirit, please open the eyes of ______.
Turn them from darkness to light.
And from the power of Satan to God.
So they may receive forgiveness of sins.
And a place among those who are sanctified by faith in [Jesus].” (18)
