Identity Crises by Jodie Montgomery
You need to know I’m a redhead, or ginger as my son calls me. As I age I’m less of a ginger due to fading but the ginger label still sticks- that may explain what I’m about to confide.
I was listening to the radio last week and thought I heard people talking about those suffering “ginger identity crisis”. My mind took off-I guess I could say it has been rough at times growing up a ginger. I thought of the teasings, the comparisons to orphan Annie, the inability to get a deep tan, and of course those wondering if I had a hot temper. I also had a PE teacher that said redheads went bald instead of grey. I hated PE. I started thinking of fellow sufferers but as I was gaining a militant mindset I suddenly
realized the radio person wasn’t talking ginger identity but gender identity! They weren’t recognizing how misunderstood I am! How frustrating! I thought I had a pitiable label…
This may get a little deep but I realized, everyone has some struggle with identity-there are those with nose identity crisis, belly bounce issues, and unibrow disdain. No matter what the struggle is I don’t think labeling helps. Why focus on the struggle or what we just don’t get or like about ourselves? How about focusing more on our character-how we can encourage others and take the focus off self? Without the basics in life-knowing we are created by an amazing, good Designer that loves us-we lose perspective. God created us for Himself and He supplies an eternal, wonderful identity when we seek His way and His truth.
“for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’”
