Praying Women By Jodie Montgomery

When I was a little girl, I would visit my Grandma Burns in Bloomfield, Iowa. I usually would stay a couple of weeks because we lived in different states or because, unbeknownst to me, this was my parents’ vacation. Whatever the case, I loved being at Grandma’s house.

Grandma liked to do crafts. When she had bridge club we would crank out party favors, chocolates dressed like ballerinas, pasta angels, and anything made with pompoms and Elmer’s glue. We used spray paint at Grandma’s house. I learned to crochet, sew, and not sniff markers with Grandma. Later in college, I got a job with Leewards as I listed myself as crafty on the store job application.

When we were not crafting we were baking. I blame my sweet tooth on Grandma. I still use her gingerbread recipe every Christmas, pumpkin bread recipe from the neighbor Lorraine at Thanksgiving, and snickerdoodle recipe from Betty C. year round. Baked goods thrill me.

One morning I thought Grandma was dead. She wasn’t out and about before I was and I needed French Toast, so I went to her room. She was on her knees doubled over on the floor by her bedside. I rushed to save her only to be shooed away as she told me she was praying. WHAT??? I had never witnessed such a thing. She told me she loved me so much that she started and ended her day praying for me, and others, as she wanted everyone to know God. I did know something about God, even back then, as Grandma Burns represented Him to me.

I attended our Women’s Ministry Prayer Tea for India this month. I enjoyed being in a room of Grandma “Burns”es. Some even brought their daughters and grand-daughters. Women in prayer, powerful.

Ezra 10:1 Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large assembly, men, women and children, gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
