Victory By Jodie Montgomery

When I started attending a Baptist Church, I thought that every service had to include the song “Victory in Jesus”. I know it is good to wake up a congregation every once in a while and that this Victory tune is catchy and upbeat but overplaying anything can become downplaying.

My first thoughts about victory were really from this anthem. I heard that victory is in Jesus as He plunged me to victory when He bought me with His redeeming blood. The cross is the believer’s victory over the death sentence due to sin.

I have since looked in Scripture to see the use of victory in the Biblical story. It is used in the Old Testament to denote when the Lord brought great victories over enemies in war who stood against Israel. The Lord is praised in 1 Chronicles 29:11 as the source of victory and majesty. Victory is also listed in Proverbs as a result of having wise guidance. In the New Testament, victory is linked to the justice of God and as the outcome of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Christ’s resurrection validates that He does have authority over death and that He overcomes the deadly consequence of sin through His perfect redemptive work. The Corinthians were told that “death has lost its sting”. All who are in Christ have victory in Him. 1 John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that that has overcome the world-our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

On a Queens mission trip this month, I met a man from Nepal. I had been trained on sharing a greeting with someone from Nepal and so I greeted him in his language (with my accent and hesitancy about pronunciation). Nepal is currently known to be a hard place for believers due to changes in the governing leaders. This gentleman smiled at me and said that he would like to teach me a new, better greeting. He said it is good to get to the point so believers in Nepal greet each other with this phrase “Jesus is my victory.” He had such a great smile as he taught me this greeting. His bold and sincere focus on victory challenged me. Defeat is not my realm. Oh to readily proclaim, I have victory in the Lord Jesus Christ.
