He is Risen!

By Jodie Montgomery

Years ago, I took my three children to the beach with a friend and her two children. All five children were under the age of 7 and we were struggling caring for all. We had gone to a beach that you had to take a ferry to get to and we were planning to stay the night. It felt remote. My middle child, Sarah, was playing in the waves and got knocked under by the current. We were close together but I lost hold of her for a moment and when I got her out and to the sand, she was very still. In those seconds, I thought she might be gone, dead. When she gasped for air, I felt this incredible relief and yet also overwhelming recognition that I had not anticipated how hard it could be to care for my three in this “wild” environment. Death was too real and too at hand.

Sometimes those in our care do not gasp for air. Life seems gone. I think it makes it even harder to grieve and heal when we suffer loss that is even remotely linked to our own inabilities or faults. Guilt can deprive us of the right to grieve well. We must remember that a last breath on this earth is not necessarily the end of the story.  When the Lord Jesus Christ died, He died because of me, my sin. 1 Corinthians 15:3 states “For I handed down to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, …”. 1 Peter 2:24 reads “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, …”. Isaiah 53:5 reminds “But He was pierced for our transgressions…” I am, you are, the source of our Savior’s suffering and death. This is gospel truth. It offends some.

Thankfully, God does not leave His children with the guilt of a dead Savior. He is risen! I rejoice in the revelation that the Savior defeated death, overcame sin, and imparted resurrection life. His resurrection gives us hope in a day when all will rise in Him. His resurrection changes everything as even sin’s worst consequence, death, does not reign. He is the air we breathe, the imparter of eternal life. Praise God for Resurrection Day!
