Bible Study is Uniting

By Jodie Montgomery

As Allison mentioned in her blog last week, some of our closest friendships are developed at Bible study. Through the years, I’ve gained prayer partners through study and friends that I know will speak truth in love to me as I have witnessed their high view of God through their committed study of His Word. I have found a treasure in the women I have met through Bible Study.

I have also discovered that there is a lot of emotion in our gatherings. If a group is confident in their identity in Christ, there is freedom. Freedom to confess struggles, freedom to stop and pray, freedom to encourage, freedom to lovingly rebuke, freedom to cry, and freedom to laugh. I remember a presidential election year when a group member stated that she hung her flag at half-mast due to election results while another lady was struggling to hide her glee over results. I remember the time we discovered that a child that was being prayed for by the group was the same child that another member of the group had just started fostering. I remember when a student of the Word for years exclaimed she finally realized she really was saved and she was feeling relief and  joy. I remember when a lady that had just been laid off at work came to group anyway as it was her favorite time of the week. I remember grieving losses and rejoicing over victories as family with women even though I didn’t necessarily remember their last name.

I have discovered a community of great women and men through Bible study. When the Word of God convicts a heart of the need for a Savior, the result is humility, hope, and joy. If a group isn’t characterized by these traits then the character of God, His merciful holiness, is being grossly overlooked. Oftentimes, I go to Bible study to find accountability and better understanding of the Word, what I find is unity in diversity, the impartiality of my Maker and the evidence of His healing grace today.

I’m concerned regarding studies this Fall. I’m concerned about some women using His Word to promote a political side rather than humbly recognizing the complexity in applying God’s Word to politics in America. I have witnessed some very disrespectful exchanges and considerable oversimplifying of issues to the point of people attacking one another’s walk with the Lord when concerns about any candidate are voiced. This grieves me. I am not underestimating the influence of a political party or the election results, I am just hoping and praying for unity among believers. I am hoping for us to have ears to hear what is really most Christlike and to love one another for His great glory. I am hoping we will all listen and learn as God is still graciously teaching His truth to those that are teachable and ready to represent Him by speaking His truth in love as they live out His merciful hope.

Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
