Bible Study is Relational

By Jodie Montgomery

Life can be a bit isolating due to busyness. I have a lot of responsibilities at home, work, and church. I’m grateful for some time savers at home, the dishwasher, vacuum and laundry, but I still know when I’ve neglected my chores and need to focus on getting all clean. It seems that days, even weeks go by and I haven’t really had a good listen to a friend. We can be caught up with just doing life and not realize that we are not sharing life with another…even those very close to us.

I remember when my lack of connection endangered my marriage. I had to learn to prioritize time with my husband. We had drifted apart in our goals and our schedules. I had to learn to care about his thoughts and his day. I had to come to the realization that he was worthy of my time and my stillness. I had to learn to stop and relate.

My struggles with communication in marriage helped me to realize that if I was going to know God then I had to learn to relate to God. When we pray to receive Christ we enter a relationship, not an one-time receive all encounter.  As with all relationships, we may have seasons of feeling close to one another and times in which we feel unknown. As with all relationships, time is involved with knowing one another. God relates to humankind through prayer, Bible study, and the church body. I learned that taking time to be still, to pray, to read His Word greatly impact my relationship with God and my ability to knowingly represent Him. Unless He reveals Himself, how could I, mere human, possibly relate to God and triumphantly bear His image? Our heavenly Father faithfully reveals Himself to His children through His Spirit and Word. So those that long for a wonderful relationship with the Father, go for His Word. At times, I still feel distant, very distant, from my Creator, but in His Word is the assurance that regardless of my feelings, He is always communicative of His love.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;  so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
