Happy New Year

By Jodie Montgomery

As we begin a New Year, I am thinking about how really new the circumstances of 2021 may be to many. I just saw a cartoon where a whole bunch of people were hiding around a corner and holding a long rod that would open a door labeled 2021. We may be feeling some trepidation about the New Year. I know a number of people hoping for or starting new jobs. There are many that have regrouped regarding their health, some healing and some changing lifestyles such that 2021 represents a new physical start for them. Many new relationships formed in 2020 due to changes in our social dynamics. Some are now best friends with zoom buddies that they’ve never met in person. I hope to meet some of my now online friends. I’m anticipating the awkward zoom moments to also play out in person. Family members may have reconnected due to more home time together, a less harried pace that we hope to guard. Even in quarantine, we continue to share life.

My sister-in-law, Marcella, in the midst of a pandemic did a very brave thing, she initiated relationships with family she had never met prior to COVID. For the month of January, in our weekly blogs, we will share her experience. Her story has reminded me of the detailed care of God in our lives, the high calling each person has in representing Him and affirming the dignity of each life, and the importance of family.

I thank God for my family, for the sister and son in-laws that have beautifully extended the family I was born into and I thank God for a church family. “He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:5-6).

We begin 2021 with the great reminder that you and I belong to a family and He is in our midst, our Abba Father, making us joint heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ. Happy New Year!
