Perseverance by Jodie Montgomery

I’m reading through the letters to the churches in Revelation Chapters 2 and 3. Do you know that the word “perseverance” is used repeatedly in these letters? God values perseverance. This word does not equate to the word I like to describe my existence, “comfortable”.  I am reconsidering God’s use of perseverance.

If you search the word “perseverance” in the Bible, you find the usage is New Testament and is linked to attributes of the mature believer. These attributes include self-controlled, godly, faithful, loving, gentle, purposeful, patient, sensible, sound, hopeful, eternal, dignified… The apostles spoke proudly of those that persevered in the midst of persecution and affliction.

I know many that are persevering for His name’s sake in the midst of evil. They persevere to show the love of God in an otherwise unloving realm. To persevere is to imitate Christ.

The churches in Revelation are encouraged to persevere. They are to persevere in the faith; to persevere in refusing evil and testing potential false teachers; to persevere, without growing weary, in Christ’s name; to persevere in love, faith and service; and to proclaim Christ’s example of perseverance. Perseverance is linked to overcoming, another popular word in the letters to the churches. There is something noble about persevering to the point of overcoming and God encourages just that for His children. The stories of great Olympians typically convey this aspect of perseverance and overcoming, victory due to hard work and learning how to thrive through adversity.

God notices your perseverance, your dedicated heart for His glory. He acknowledges and ultimately rewards those who persevere. Your perseverance demonstrates your belief in the love of God. We are determined and dedicated to work hard regardless of obstacles when we have a firm grasp of His reality. Perseverance is the mark of a great leader, an impassioned saint.

Perseverance may make us more ready to sleep peacefully at the end of the day than does comfortable. Perseverance makes His Body thrive.

Romans 15:4-6 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
