Gift of God

By Jodie Montgomery

I enjoy giving gifts to those I love if I have an idea what the recipient would value and/or need. I like the recipient to feel really touched by my thoughtfulness, maybe even tear up as they open the gift. My selfless love sometimes rebounds. Gift giving can become more about me than my loved one….

Sometimes, it is really hard to figure out what to gift. I pray for insight and creativity. At Christmas time, I take the guess work out of my gifting for family. Part of their Christmas preparations is to make me a detailed potential gift list complete with website links, color photos, and sizes. I want the details. I want to know their desires. I think my children have enjoyed this through the years. I have received really long lists from them with some big ticket items listed at times. I also see the little things that would be fun to have in a stocking. I learn a little more about them. Rarely do they list socks. I always get them new socks at Christmas. They usually need socks. I rarely get socks. I would like socks.

I’ve saved the list through the years. I think we remember the list production time, and the laughter, more than what we actually received from one another year after year. Most gifts are pretty temporal, we readily outgrow them.

God, our Good Father, gives a gift that enriches you and me eternally. I celebrate that gift each Christmas remembering how much God’s gift of His Son demonstrates His thoughtful, abundant love.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
