Mom Thoughts

By Susan Grace Smith

My name is Susan and I have two kiddos at home. My first is a toddler boy. He is extremely active, super smiley and very headstrong. I am constantly trying to teach him to “listen and obey,” “listen and obey,” “stop…, listen and obey.” A lot of my parenting seems to involve trying to convince him to do something that needs to be done. I am constantly bribing and pleading and so forth. Sometimes it’s to use the bathroom so we can get in the car and go to the zoo; sometimes it’s to get dressed so we can go see friends; sometimes it’s to eat dinner so we can have dessert later. I am shocked how much I have to plead when it’s always for his benefit. Like why would going to Legoland take convincing?

One day it hit me.. God has proven again and again that He always does what is best for me. So why does God have to plead with me to do what is right? My son has every reason to trust me and I have even more reasons to trust God. Following God will always be what is good for me. So I ask you, what is keeping you from trusting God? It reminded me of God saving the Israelites out of Egypt, only for the Israelites to doubt and grumble against God. God has saved me by sacrificing His son, so I should not (but I do) doubt or grumble against God.

Proverbs 3:5-6“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

1 Corinthians 10:6-13“Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.’ We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Let us remember who God is and what He has done for us so that we will trust in Him and live in faith. And for all the moms on Mother’s Day, let us be humble when we are having yet another debate with a child that we only wish to bless.
