Happy Fall Y’all & Lorraine’s Pumpkin Bread Recipe

By Jodie Montgomery

I lived in Bloomfield, Iowa as a child. I remember snowy streets, a quaint downtown square with a courthouse, a dress shop, the Fina gas station candy area, and the neighbors. My dad was in Viet Nam, and we were part of the neighbors’ patriotic duty.

We got our cars from the neighborhood dealer, we enjoyed the swing set two doors down, and we ate Lorraine’s pumpkin bread in the Fall. We ate this bread with cream cheese slathered on and cinnamon sprinkled. Lorraine made a lot of pumpkin bread. If you didn’t eat it while it was hot, it could get old and hard. That wasn’t a problem at our house. The bread didn’t last long upon receipt.

Because of Lorraine, I associate Fall a bit with pumpkin bread. We weren’t big into decorating seasonally or Halloween, but we enjoyed the change in flavor. We also had a bit of candy corn in little glass dishes. The pumpkin bread signified safety and abundance.

In later years, I started using Lorraine’s recipe and making lots of loaves to share. Now the baking puts a smile on my face, a connection to a simpler time and to a woman who shared with her neighbors.

My Mom showed up at my house the other day with a different loaf of pumpkin bread. She tried another recipe. This was startling. Of all people, I thought my Mom a devoted fan of Lorraine’s pumpkin bread recipe. Mom is who I call when I cannot remember if I have the ingredients correct. What was Mom thinking?

Turns out Mom’s new recipe by some unknown entity was good. I’m not saying better as both recipes make very good bread. I’m not saying variety is the spice of life either. I just need a little time to process what is important in the making of the bread, loyalty to past friends and recipes; being open to change; or not overanalyzing the gift?

Matthew 7:11 “So if you, despite being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
