In The Know: Christmas in July

In The Know: Christmas in July

Christmas in July

By Jodie Montgomery

Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Last year, the Idlewild Women’s Ministry celebrated Advent by posting daily readings, blogs,  children’s activities, and worship songs at idlewild.org/women. We wanted to connect women in worshipful celebration of God with us – the joy of Christmas, the incarnation of God. We hoped for families to have a daily means of rejoicing together for the Holy Days.

This year we are purposing to get the word out earlier as some women contacted us partway through Advent and after wishing “they had only known”. We do not want any to miss the anticipation of the celebration. We realize that sometimes women just need advance notice to schedule in some joy. Sometimes a little Christmas in July goes a long way in preparing our hearts and implanting hope in Him. Remembering Christ in us is life changing. So Merry Christmas 2020! It has been a year of chaos and hardship for many. Let’s remind one another that the Lord Jesus Christ is still Immanuel, God with us.

This year for Advent, we will walk through the Christmas story emphasizing the Names of God. We will focus on the verse, Luke 2:10-11, that begins “Do not be afraid…” and heralds the birth of our Savior.

To emphasize the scriptures, scripting by our members, women of all ages, will be collected. If you want to submit some Scripture art, please contact me about a verse to script. We trust this will help us share His truth with many. You may also fill out our scripting form to sign up: CLICK HERE FOR FORM

Last year, children designed the artwork for ornaments. This year we will use the scripting by our women of all ages to design banners for the children to color that may be hung as garlands. We hope to engage families in the Scriptures again this year through daily enjoyment of a passage together. We hope to support our homes with an opportunity to praise Him as family.

I’ve always loved Christmas. My family decorated our home. Grandma Burns did gingerbread men. My dad painted a life size Santa going down the chimney and setup the artwork on our chimney. We got out the Christmas piano music and had recitals.

As a wife and mom, I may have gone overboard on Christmas. I overspent on gifts. I overanalyzed what would make people “happy”. I overbaked and overate. I lived on some expectations that were not realistic. Sometimes, I missed the heart of Christmas. I learned to value Advent, the remembrance of His great gift of Himself, the anticipation of a Savior that draws us out of the darkness and into His Light. I look forward to another Advent when His justice will be made known and all nations will gather in song. Merry Christmas!
