August 2026 — June 2027 · Idlewild Baptist Church · Tampa, Florida
A 40-week journey into pastoral and missional ministry — built for those discerning God’s call to lead, plant, and shepherd.
Program Overview
Idlewild’s Equip Cohorts are designed to foster spiritual growth, theological understanding, and practical ministry skills while participants explore the nature of pastoral and missional ministry.
Participants gain a robust understanding of the local church — its functions and its leadership — through reading, writing, observing, and serving. While many are pursuing vocational ministry, the program is equally formative for those preparing to serve as lay leaders.
Foundational ministry subjects that establish a theological and missiological framework.
Weekly theological and missiological conversations that sharpen a biblically rooted holistic approach to ministry.
Witness pastoral interactions firsthand through leadership discussions, staff meetings, and intentional discipleship.
Actively engage church life and ministry, learning the rhythms, challenges, and rewards of pastoral leadership.
One-on-one pastoral mentorship as you seek out your next steps in ministry and life.
Qualified men will likely have opportunities to teach and preach across a variety of contexts.
Two Tracks, One Calling
Both cohorts run alongside each other — sharing the same rhythm, formation, and rigor — but each is shaped for a distinct call to ministry.
A focused track for men aspiring to vocational or bivocational pastoral leadership in the local church — centered on biblical exposition, ecclesiology, and shepherding.
A formation track open to men and women pursuing God’s call to global missions or church planting — rooted in missiology and cross-cultural ministry.
Leadership
You’ll learn from pastors who have spent their lives shepherding churches and sending workers into the harvest.

Who This Is For
Two non-negotiables shape who is accepted into the cohort — an active life with the local church, and a life that reflects the character Scripture requires of those who lead.
Participants are expected to be members of Idlewild Baptist Church, actively involved in worship services, small groups, and the ministries of the church — not just for the season of the cohort, but as their ongoing pattern of life.
Starting Point, our class for church membership, is held the first Sunday of each month.
All participants are expected to be above reproach in every area of life. The pastors maintain the right to remove any cohort participant at any time on the grounds of character issues — including, but not limited to, laziness or procrastination on assignments.
Cohort members must maintain personal integrity and live as model believers.
1 Timothy 3:1–7 · ESV
If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach… He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?
— The Apostle Paul to TimothyWeekly Rhythm
Most of the cohort happens in the rhythm of normal church life — with focused moments of study, conversation, and pastoral observation woven through the week.
Three Tiers of Commitment
Every commitment in the program falls into one of three tiers. The lines are clear — so you know exactly what’s required, what should be prioritized, and what’s offered for your growth.
Failure in any of these items could lead to dismissal from the program.
Flexible but should be prioritized highly. Prolonged failure could result in dismissal.
Recommended for personal growth — not to be prioritized over anything in the Expected category.
The Curriculum
Each week of the cohort centers on a single book and one focused conversation. Reading averages ~170 pages weekly. A one-page reflection paper is due each Sunday by 11:59 PM — engaged theologically, scripturally, and practically.
Pastoral Care & Formation
Every participant is paired with a pastor or leader for ongoing care, formation, and accountability throughout the program.
Each participant is paired with a pastor or leader to meet with regularly — both to walk through your experience in the cohort and to look after your personal well-being.
This is not a passive arrangement. The responsibility falls on the participant to pursue these meetings and establish a consistent rhythm with their assigned pastor.
Reading & Papers
Each week culminates in a reflection paper due by Sunday 11:59 PM — a chance to engage critically with the reading and prepare for Wednesday’s subject discussion.
Our Confessional Foundation
The cohort is shaped by the BF&M 2000 — the confessional statement adopted by Southern Baptists as a witness to the doctrines most surely held among us. Eighteen articles span the breadth of Christian conviction.

Read ArticleSunday · 12:45 PM
Cohort members gather after Sunday morning to break down the sermon together — with the pastors who preached it.
Wednesday · 8:00 PM
After the 6:30 PM Wednesday service, cohort members meet with their pastors to discuss the prior week's reading — receiving feedback on their papers and defending their ideas in informal conversation. Most run from 8:00–9:30 PM.
For a few cohort members ready to step closer to the work, the Ministry Internship adds a part-time, paid role inside Idlewild — serving directly under a key leader while completing the full cohort.
The Ministry Intern role is designed for those who aspire to vocational Christian ministry and are looking for hands-on exposure to various areas of church ministry. This part-time, temporary position provides practical experience in ministry responsibilities, discipleship, and church operations — equipping interns with skills and knowledge necessary for full-time ministry.
Interns engage in all the responsibilities of the Cohort alongside added administrative and ministry responsibilities. They serve under a key leader in the church, assisting their overseer in any necessary tasks — with extra opportunities for evangelism, discipleship, pastoral care meetings, preaching, teaching, and hospital visits.
This role is ideal for those seeking to explore their calling while developing a deeper understanding of servant leadership and functional ministry in the local church context - including Evanglism, Discipleship, Pastoral Care, Preaching & Teaching and Hospital Visits.

Most prospective cohort members have similar questions. If yours isn’t covered here, reach out — we’d love to talk with you about your call to ministry.
Still have questions?
MinistryPathway@idlewild.orgNo. We offer one annual cohort that begins in August and concludes the following June — running roughly 40 weeks. The next cohort runs August 9, 2026 — May 23, 2027.
Yes. We currently have partnerships with Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) that allow cohort participants to receive credit toward an M.Div. or related degree.
To receive seminary credit, you’ll need to be enrolled at one of these institutions and complete the additional requirements they specify. Reach out for more details on how this works.
Absolutely. The cohort is designed to help you discern your calling. Many participants enter the program unsure about vocational ministry — and the year of reading, conversation, and pastoral observation helps clarify their direction.
Even if you ultimately don’t pursue vocational ministry, the cohort equips you to be a stronger lay leader, small group leader, deacon, or church member.
Yes. The Missional Cohort is open to both men and women who are pursuing God’s call to global missions or church planting in non-pastoral roles.
The Pastoral Cohort is limited to men, as Idlewild affirms the biblical pattern that the office of pastor/elder/overseer is reserved for qualified men (BF&M Article VI).
A college degree is ideal but not required. We welcome applications from those with diverse educational backgrounds — what matters most is your aspiration to ministry, your character, and your willingness to engage rigorous reading and writing.
If you wish to receive seminary credit, the partnering seminary may have its own degree requirements (typically a completed bachelor’s degree).
Yes. We welcome applications from non-native English speakers. The cohort involves significant reading and writing in English, so a strong working command of the language is helpful — but we’re happy to talk through what this looks like for your situation.
Reach out to MinistryPathway@idlewild.org and we’ll walk through your specific context with you.
The Cohort itself is not a paid position — it’s a formation program, not a job. Participants are expected to maintain their normal employment or financial arrangements throughout the year.
The Ministry Internship — an optional add-on for select cohort members — is a paid, part-time temporary role at Idlewild. Interns are compensated for their scheduled intern hours. Cohort reading, writing, and meetings are separate and don't count toward those hours.
Yes — in fact, the cohort is specifically designed for that. Most participants are working full-time jobs throughout the year. The weekly meetings happen in evenings and on Sundays, and the reading and writing fit into roughly 10 hours per week of personal study time.
The Ministry Internship, by contrast, requires a more substantial weekly commitment of administrative hours and may not be feasible alongside a full-time job — we’d talk through this with applicants on a case-by-case basis.
Cohort members participate in the life of the church primarily through reading, writing, observing, and serving — not through specific ministry oversight or assignment.
You’ll attend pastoral staff meetings, observe service preparation, engage in subject reviews, and serve through your normal channels in the church (small group, ministry team, etc.).
If you want a more hands-on ministry role with specific responsibilities, the Ministry Internship may be the right next step for you.
